Solar panels, or photovoltaics (PV), capture the sun’s energy and convert it into electricity. Panels consist of cells which don’t need direct sunlight to work, however, the stronger the sunshine, the more electricity is generated.
Systems are made up of several panels (called an array) that typically generate direct current (DC) electricity which is then converted (by an inverter) into alternating current (AC) so you can use it in your home.
A battery storage unit is used to store excess energy produced so that none of it is wasted and you can call upon it when you are ready. Some battery storage units (such as Tesla Powerwall) contain an integrated inverter that can take the DC electricity from your solar panels and convert it in to AC to be stored. This means that a separate inverter is not normally required, saving you money on parts and installation.
